Cappelen Damm Acquires Høyskoleforlaget

Educational aids and textbook publisher Høyskoleforlaget to become sister unit to Cappelen Damm Akademisk.

Norwegian book publisher Cappelen Damm has announced it will acquire educational materials and textbook publisher Høyskoleforlaget. Based in Kristiansand, Høyskoleforlaget is among the premier publishers of its kind in Norway, focusing on health care and social issues, pre-school and teacher education, humanities, natural and social sciences as well as journalism and media studies.

Brage Prize to Three Cappelen Damm Authors

Cappelen Damm authors big winners for this year's Brage Prize in Norway.

Norway's most prestigious book award, the Brage Prize, was given out on Nov. 24 and among the five winners were three authors from Cappelen Damm. Longtime Cappelen Damm author Kolbein Falkeid won an honorary award for his lifetime's work - Falkeid has been with Cappelen since his debut in 1962. In the category of best children's or young adult book of the year, Inga Sætre for her book Fallteknikk; also nominated was Sverre Knudsen for Arons Maskin.

Toca Boca Telenor Digital Winner 2011

Yesterday, at the Digital Winners conference, Telenor announced that the winner of this year's Digital Winners Prize is Toca Boca, the toy studio that makes digital toys for kids in the form of apps.

Bonnier Publishes Steve Jobs' Biography in Swedish and Norwegian

Cappelen Damm and Albert Bonniers Förlag publish Walter Isaacson's book about Apple founder.

On Oct. 5, a giant departed the earth – Steve Jobs. Science historian and former TIME editor Walter Isaacson followed Jobs for a number of years and interviewed him 40 times. The result is a biography that will be released on Oct. 24 in the U.S. and some 20 other countries. Among them is Sweden, published by Albert Bonniers Förlag.

"Jobs let nothing slide, including the choice of author for his biography," says publisher Martin Kaunitz.

Norwegian Bonnier Titles Increase Readership

The latest readership numbers a significant jump for a number of Bonnier Media magazines in Norway. 

When the fall's reader data was released by independent research firm Synovate, Norway's Bonnier Media had reason to celebrate. Women's title Costume had increased by 38.9 percent and Tara by 17.1 percent.

We spoke with Bonnierförlagen CEO Jacob Dalborg and Bonnier Media Deutschland CEO Hartmut Jedicke about the new roles each will be taking – Dalborg on the boards of the Finnish and Norwegian book companies and Jedicke as board chair for Bonnier Publishing in the U.K.

What are your goals for the Nordic country operations and Finland in particular, Jacob?

Jacob Dalborg: For my part it's about working to ensure we have clever and competitive strategies for each country and putting our efforts into the literary strengths we have at Bonnier.

SF Kino to Build Norway's Biggest Cinema

SF Bio's subsidiary SF Kino to build a new movie theater, Festningen Kino, in a hot spot in Oslo.

SF Bio's Norwegian subsidiary SF Kino has announced it will be building Norway's biggest movie theater in Oslo. The new theater will be called Festningen Kino (which translates to the fortress cinema) and will be built on land next to the Akershus fortress. SF Kino has long wanted to establish itself in Oslo, and for the first time the right spot has become available, says SF Bio's CEO Jan Bernhardsson.

New Focus

Maria Curman will be stepping down as CEO for Bonnier Books at the end of 2011 after ten years as CEO.

Maria Curman will be leaving her position as CEO of Bonnier Books and will be focusing instead on her work as a Bonnier board member. As a result, Bonnierförlagen CEO Jacob Dalborg will be taking on responsibilities for Bonnier's Finnish and Norwegian operations within books, and Bonnier Media Deutschland CEO Hartmut Jedicke will become the new board chair for Bonnier Publishing in the U.K.

At the Norwegian audiobook site ordflyt, users can download talks from eight Norwegian political party leaders.

Last week local elections were held in Norway. Knowing who to vote for isn't always so easy, but Cappalen Damm's new audiobook site Ordflyt has done its part to help undecided voters: from a week before the election, users could download and listen to audio files of the party leaders presenting themselves and their programs.
