TV4 Acquires Rights to Handball League Home Games

The TV4 Group has secured the exclusive broadcast rights to the Swedish handball league's home games for 2011-2014. The contract, signed with the Svenska Handbollförbundet (the Swedish Handball Association), includes home matches for both the men's and women's leagues, as well as world and European championship matches between national teams.

With the acquisition, the TV4 Group strengthens its portfolio of handball broadcast rights.

Stockholmsmässan and TV4 Group Form Company

Last week  Swedish daily Sydsvenskan and Numera Mässor started a new event company, Sydsvenska Mässor och Events. Now it's Stockholms turn, with the TV4 Group and event company Stockholmsmässan starting up a new company called Besöksupplevelser Sverige AB.

The TV4 Group to Launch 24-hour News Channel

Along with a new 24-hour news channel, the TV4 Group is starting a news company with Bonnier Broadcasting.

This fall, the 24-hour news channel Nyhetskanalen will premier in Sweden.

The TV4 Group and Bonnier Broadcasting have also decided to create a common news organization for production of news and current affairs for the TV4 Group and other external partners.

Casten Almqvist to Be New CEO for the TV4 Group

Casten Almqvist to succeed Jan Scherman as CEO for the TV4 Group starting Jan. 2012.

After 10 years as CEO for the TV4 Group, Jan Scherman will be moving on. His successor, Casten Almqvist, is currently CEO for Dagens industri, Bonnier Business Press and Bonnier Digital.

"TV4 has a unique position among Swedish audiences, created by employees and management through providing really good programs," says Almqvist.

TV4 Group Launches Health Initiative with RF and GIH

The First Step initiative aims to get Swedes more active.

On May 15, a new health initiative launches: Första steget (the first step), a cooperation between the TV4 Group, the Swedish Sports Confederation (RF) and the Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences (GIH).

TV4 Play Goes Higher Tech

New deal between TV4 Group and Samsung means TV4 Play on-demand services can be watched directly on viewers' TV sets.

The TV4 Group has joined Samsung in making its on-demand service TV4 Play available as an application in TV devices and Blu-ray players with Internet connection from Samsung. Those with TV4 Play's premium service will be able to watch shows whenever they want using Samsung's Smart TV devices.

"We're happy with our cooperation with Samsung," says Cecilia Beck-Friis, director of digital media for the TV4 Group.

Record Year for TV4 Group

A year marked by increased profits, 2010 was great for Sweden's TV4.

Swedish TV4 Group had its best year ever in 2010, with operating profits of SEK 807 million, in part thanks to strong ad sales and growth in local TV markets. The results represent an increase of 26 percent compared to 2009.  

"The TV4 Group reported yet again strong year-end results," says CEO Jan Scherman. "The record profit is proof of the hard work of everyone in the company. The year was marked by new business, new initiatives, new program hits, new program offerings and new platforms - and of continued success with ad sales, both nationally and locally."

Johan Kleberg New CEO for Canal+

Local presence strengthened with new country leaders for Canal+ in Sweden and Norway.

Current COO for Canal+ Johan Kleberg will become the new CEO for C More Entertainment/Canal+ when current CEO Jonas Eriksson returns to Bonnier Broadcasting & Entertainment as vice president.

TV4 Buys RTV from Expressen

In-store TV company Segelman Retail Television AB (RTV), which until now has been owned by Expressen, will become instead a part of the TV4 Group. Along with the change of owner, the company will change its name to TV4 Retail Television AB.

TV400 to Become TV11

On January 19 the new TV11 premieres - a relaunch of TV400 with a focus on entertainment.

Big Brother, a show acquired by the TV4 Group, will be one of the programming highlights when TV11 launches on Jan. 19, 2011, replacing the current TV400. The audience for the channel is primarily 15-39 year olds and the programming will focus on entertainment.
