Life At Bonnier - May 2009

Kaisa Climbs

GROW's Kaisa handles learning new research software and helps build a climbing wall in Brooklyn.

After Memorial Day, I start my 4th week here in NYC (Memorial Day is a U.S. federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May. It is a day of remembrance for those who have died in the military service.)  During my first three weeks, I have learned a lot. I have gotten seven training sessions for different software and two own larger projects. It seems to me that they have a lot more software and online databases here than we have in Finland.  In addition, all software here is new to me.

Green Stockholm

GROW's Audrey Bay enjoys the Stockholm spring while helping Bonnierförlagen study their carbon impact.

Well, we're almost near the end of month one and time has really just flown by. There are so many things to see and experience and I've only just scratched the surface. I'm becoming more and more familiar with the city and I don't feel quite as lost as I did when I first arrived. It's now starting to get a lot warmer here, which makes it easier and more enjoyable to be outside (which is such a great place to be in Stockholm).

The Heat Is On

Patricia Schmid explores life in Florida, weathering tornadoes and hiding from the humidity.

I used my first days at Bonnier Corporation to take a closer look at all the different software tools. It also took me a while to get accustomed to the air conditioning system—I always have a scarf with me, I get easily cold sometimes. Last week we also had a lot of heavy rainfalls (over 20 inches) and a warning for tornados. Nevertheless, I was able to explore the city of Winter Park.  There is even a small beach at a lake a 15-minute walk away, but I am still not sure whether I will go for a swim or not.

In the Zone

Finnish GROW ambassador Päivi learns to speak low in the cubicles she recognizes from the movies.

This week has been raining really hard, stormy weather and first tornado alert while I have been here. When I decided to give up and buy an umbrella yesterday after work, we got a clear sky. So, buying the umbrella worked for a day but today it looks like I can put it to use again.

Autumn in Australia

GROW ambassador Nia Williams learns a few tricks from her Five Mile Press co-workers.

Well, it's been nearly three weeks here in Melbourne, and I think I'm starting to feel at home in the big city and at Five Mile Press.

Getting up at 6.30 in the morning is a real struggle for me, considering I would be fast asleep at that time in England. I have been getting trains, trams, buses and lifts to and from work, which take about an hour and a half each way. I normally get home at between 6.30 and 7pm in the evening, when it's dark.

Summer in Winter Park

Swedish GROW ambassador Jonas Westin brings Boating Life videos to life.

How y'all doing back home?

This is my third week here in Orlando, Florida at Bonnier Marine Group. Bonnier is getting pretty tired of hearing about Florida's beautiful beaches, sun, beer, cool people and other great stuff that makes life here such an awesome time. I got orders of writing about what work I actually do here at Bonnier. ;)

What is your mission at Bonnier?

Strong Finnish

GROW ambassador Michael Goesele discovers that the Finns create the most magazines per capita.

Hello Bonnier friends and employees worldwide. My name is Michael Goesele and I am the Art Director of Destination Weddings & Honeymoons Magazine in Bonnier's Winter Park, FL office. As part of the GROW program, I have come to Helsinki, Finland to work on the launch of a new women's interest publication entitled Evita. From its rich cultural past to its creative community, Helsinki is a treasure trove of adventures waiting to be discovered.

Design Around the World

GROW ambassador Malin Westman takes her design skills from Stockholm to Sydney.

A little bit more then a week has passed since I arrived at the Sydney airport (5 am) where Sue Burke, Creative Director at Weldon Owen Publishing, kindly picked me up. Then off to the apartment which has a great view of the city. I can even see the roof of the Opera House—not bad!

The colleagues are not only friendly but fun! The humor hits a good level in this office. Today my new co-workers imitated sounds and calls of Australian birds, very educational. You can tell this is a non-fiction publisher—they know their facts.

Lisa in Stockholm

GROW ambassador Lisa Julius tours Stockholm for the weekend.

I just returned from a wonderful (but much too brief) weekend in Stockholm.  I tried to fit as much as I could into the short time.  I took the Under the Bridges tour, which took us under 14 bridges…the weather was perfect so it was a great day to do such a trip.  After the tour, I did a walk around Old Town, then stopped in a café for a little break, and walked over to Vasa museum.  The Vasa is so interesting…it is amazing that the ship was underwater for so many years and they were able to raise it intact!  The island Vasa is on is particularly pretty…there is a b
