Life At Bonnier - October 2009

Tuija Kuusela: Princesses and princess cakes

Tuija from Finland looks forward to next year's wedding boom in Sweden – while working on Bonnier Fakta's wedding calendar.

The content of the work at Bonnierförlagen has been quite familiar to me, because it's very similar to the work I'm used to do at Tammi Publishers. From the very beginning I've been entrusted challenging and diverse tasks: cover designs for both fiction and non-fiction books, typografical inner layouts for non-fiction titles and even some illustrations (an area I almost had forgot in Finland because of the lack of time).

Sigurd Eriksen: I can't believe it almost over

Sigurd is looking at his final days as a GROW ambassador in Finland and takes a magazine legend out for dinner.

I can't believe it almost over. I'm actually checking up on my plane ticket back home already. Well, SAS have no record of it, but I have an email saying I have bought it, so I guess I'll get back to Norway somehow. Or maybe I'll just show up at work in Helsinki Monday morning. You never know.

Lisa Matusova: Sour cream and other pleasures of a GROW participant's life

Our Russian GROW ambassador Lisa becomes a tv star in Finland!

The last weeks have brought new unexpected pleasure to my life. For more than 2 weeks I'm one of the hosts of the channel on which I work as a GROW program participant.

The whole story begun as a joke. During our corporate trip to Suomenlinna, in a restaurant with a glass of wine I told my colleagues about my working experience and mentioned the work as a host on St. Petersburg's MTV channel. Then my colleagues just for fun said: "Maybe you should make your own Russian speaking show on our channel?" Supporting the tone of the conversation I answered: "Sure, why not?"

Jorid Aldrin: Unexpected meeting at the laundromat

Our Swedish GROW ambassador Jorid finds out that it is the unexpected meetings that makes traveling alone extra exciting.

One of the best things when you are traveling all by yourself or if you are living in a new country is that you meet new people that you never would have meet if you had been travelling with friends or family.

During my very first week in Denmark, I tried out the laundromat across the street from my apartment. The whole laundromat thing is new to me, because in Sweden everyone have their own washing machine or a laundry room in the basement of their apartment building that can be used only by the residents.

Kristin Mack Alnaes: Crave the light-hearted being

Kristin, our Norwegian GROW blogger, realizes that she laughs everyday — thanks to the World's Funniest City.

Primarily to avoid any kind of misunderstanding: I miss my husband while I am here in Sydney. I feel guilty for leaving him behind in Norway just a couple of weeks after we got married. I also miss my dog and her soft white fur. It seems that I have forgotten that she regularly likes to give herself a spa treatment in mud — and in similar brown elements she can find in nature...

Despite all this, Sydney offers several reasons not to dig a deep hole of loneliness and misery. Not least, there are quite a few opportunities to laugh.

Ylva Lundberg: Snorkling, burgers and one-legged turtles

Our GROW ambassador Ylva visits a skateboard event, goes snorkling and puts on bad sunscreen.

Hi there. This weekend me and my handyman went to the Dew Tour to see some of the best skaters and BMX riders compete and showing off there best tricks. This was a really fun event going on the whole weekend. What I think is very interesting with the publishing industry here is how they not only use traditional marketing channels like printed and digital medias but also how you can market the magazines through events and other happenings. I think that's a great way to build up loyalty towards advertisers as well as the subscribers.

Steffen Trannerup: Marketing programs, alligators and rock 'n’ roll

Steffen looks for email programs for magazine subscribers and sees his favorite rock band in Tampa.

As a part of relation marketing I've been looking into automated email programs, mainly for the email newsletters. Something we have implemented on the Scandinavian market during the last two years. Probably sometime next week we will launch a sign up confirmation email, which will be the first in a line of automated emails from Bonnier Corporation.

Monika Klinar: Diversity of tastes

Monika, our GROW blogger from Slovenia, enjoys the tastes of New York and gives you her best tips.

Hi! As promised in my last post, this one is going to be about pursuing another passion of mine here in NYC: eating and tasting the food of the world. First, you need a bit of background, so you'll understand why this place is so exciting in terms of the food it offers. I am quite certain that you could divide people in those who don't care what they will have for breakfast, lunch or dinner, as long as they are not hungry anymore, and those who look forward to their eating time, as one of the best parts of their day (ok, I'm exaggerating a bit). Well, I am in the latter group.

Tuija Kuusela: Trying to get along with the Swedish language

Tuija experiences the differences between Swedish spoken in Finland and in Sweden.

Bonnier Fakta has existed for one year. The amount editional staff is about 25 people, and they release about 65 new titles every year. Fakta is the result of a reorganization and merging of the lists of the illustrated non-fiction titles of the three publishing companies that belongs to Bonnierförlagen: Albert Bonniers Förlag, Forum and Wahlström & Widstrand.

Sigurd Eriksen: Colorful Helsinki

Our GROW blogger Sigurd finds that there is always a naked story to tell from Finland.

Summer is starting to be a distant memory and after several remarkable weeks of nice weather here in Helsinki the fall has finally arrived. Well — I'm not so happy for the autumn, but colder days and nights means that we are getting closer to the winter and snow, and that I love. Yesterday it actually did snow, but not for long (maybe it was more like heavy, white rain). But at least the fall brings beautiful colors and crispy air.
