Life At Bonnier - Nia Williams

Nia Williams: Farewell Melbourne

Our GROW blogger Nia Williams recaps what she has learned in Australia

Can you believe it? My time here is nearly over. I'm sad thinking about it. I have less than two weeks left here in cold and damp Melbourne, but at least it will be warm and damp where I'm going next!!!  Monsoon season in southeast Asia. I can't wait. I think I deserve a holiday after getting up at stupid o'clock every morning!!

My time here at Five Mile Press has been an experience and an adventure. Not everyday you get a chance to work abroad.

Nia Williams: Frankfurt Prep

GROW's Nia puts in a request for a new mock-up table and recommends Five Mile's advance copy incentive

Well, we are still very busy at Five Mile. We are currently working on titles for the Frankfurt Book Fair for the end of September this year. I bet you're really envious, aren't you Autumn, as we do ours two weeks before the book fairs. I suppose the joke is on me really, because I'm doing Frankfurt stuff now in Australia, and when I get back to the UK, I'll be starting again! The reason Five Mile has started early is because a lot of the mockups get done at the printers, rather than in-house.

Happy Birthday, Nia

GROW's Nia celebrates a birthday abroad, and gives us her third work tip

I know I mentioned birthdays in my last blog, and June is certainly popular.  It was my birthday on Tuesday (16th June). When Five Mile asked me when my birthday was, I truthfully said, "Soon." So naturally, they set about finding out when it was. A couple of weeks went by, and nothing more was said until Tuesday.

I arrived at work, nobody mentioned it. Phew, I thought to myself, I got away with it. Come 3:00 and Aimee (senior designer) asked if I could help her out. I turned round, and there everybody was gathered round the table with a huge cake!

Let Them Eat Cake

GROW's Nia Williams gives us office tip number two from Melbourne's Five Mile Press

I've been here nearly five weeks now, and I can honestly say that Five Mile is extremely quiet, unlike Autumn! I've noticed that the phones don't ring at Five Mile, unlike every minute at Autumn, but that's probably due to a receptionist. Whatever call comes in gets directed to that person or department. On the other hand, they do have more than one number.

There is no music being played here, not even the radio; everyone is very quiet and studious. To me, Five Mile is enormous in comparison to Autumn, especially their warehouse, which is about three times as big as ours.

Autumn in Australia

GROW ambassador Nia Williams learns a few tricks from her Five Mile Press co-workers

Well, it's been nearly three weeks here in Melbourne, and I think I'm starting to feel at home in the big city and at Five Mile Press.

Getting up at 6.30 in the morning is a real struggle for me, considering I would be fast asleep at that time in England. I have been getting trains, trams, buses and lifts to and from work, which take about an hour and a half each way.

Meet Nia Williams

From the U.K. to Melbourne: Our new GROW blogger travels to sunny Australia for three months

My name is Nia Williams, and I'm a designer for Autumn Publishing in the UK. I've been working for Autumn now for over 8 years. I mainly design children's books on learning range, activities, and coloring.  I've even illustrated a few books in the last year, too, which amazed myself. I have just finished a huge range for a supermarket called Morrisons, which is amazing because they have asked for reprints.
