Bonnier Corporation Magazines Win Two ASME Awards
It was a night of firsts for Bonnier Corp. at last week's National Magazine Awards - Field & Stream won its first ASME award ever; Saveur took its first win since 2000; and with more than 20 employees in attendance, Bonnier Corp. enthusiastically welcomed headlines and congratulations from the magazine industry.
Field & Stream claimed top honors for the night, landing the coveted General Excellence award from the American Society of Magazine Editors, widely regarded as the industry's top prize. Saveur won in the Single-Topic Issue category, recognizing a magazine that has devoted an issue to an in-depth examination of one topic.
"To be acknowledged by your peers is the highest honor one can receive, and it is a well-deserved reward for the editorial teams at both Saveur and Field & Stream," said Terry Snow, CEO of Bonnier Corp.
"This award is a testament to our hardworking and talented staff," said Anthony Licata, Editor of Field & Stream. "Hunting and fishing offer such rich subject matter-mountains and rivers, family and tradition, life and death-and it's a privilege to be a part of this heritage."
The award for General Excellence recognizes the effectiveness with which writing, reporting, editing and design all come together to command readers' attention and fulfill the magazine's unique editorial mission. In its 113-year history, Field & Stream has been nominated 12 times for the National Magazine Awards, including nine in the last three years.
"Winning General Excellence wasn't a vote only for Field & Stream but for the great American heritage of hunting and fishing and for sportsmen everywhere," said Eric Zinczenko, Group Publisher of Field & Stream.
Saveur's win was for its October 2008 issue: A World of Breakfast. The judges said, "Through striking images and evocative writing, Saveur succeeds in elevating breakfast from a simple meal of sustenance to one worthy of celebration. From basic bacon and eggs to stir-fried noodles served in Singapore, this delightful package opens readers' eyes to the intimacy-and surprising dimensions-of the first meal of the day.
"It was a true thrill to receive the award-an affirmation of the dedicated, sincere work that Saveur's staff attempts to accomplish every day. It was also an affirmation that our readers are compelled not just by appealing food content but by in-depth material that celebrates the joyous multiplicity of the world's eating habits," said James Oseland, Editor-in-Chief of Saveur, who accepted the award Thursday night. With 18 nominations in its history, Saveur won in this category for the first time and has won four times altogether.
"I was thrilled to watch Jim accept the award on behalf of the entire Saveur editorial team with a humble pride. His team works so hard to put together a beautiful magazine that is not only inspirational but creative and irreverent in its delivery of information about the pleasures of food around the world," said Merri Lee Kingsly, Publisher of Saveur.
In addition to the wins by Field & Stream and Saveur, two other Bonnier brands were honored with nominations: Popular Science and Parenting.
We congratulate all of them for a job well done!
