It's been a really great start here in Tallinn at Äripäev, one of Bonnier Business Press' (BBP) flagships. Äripäev, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this September, is one of Dagens Industri's sister newspapers in Eastern Europe. The paper has done well despite the global financial situation, and especially in the Baltic. Ad revenues have decreased by over 70 percent, but through early cost cutting the company has achieved the impossible: to deliver a profit!
The company is, with around 200 employees, an entrepreneurial company with a variety of products. There are, for example, eight niche sites targeting everything from secretaries and accountants to foreign investors.
I've been welcomed with open arms. At the airport, I was met by two of my new colleagues and at the apartment there was food in the fridge and flowers on the table. They also took me on a guided tour around the historic Tallinn. The city is one enormous contrast between picturesque, old buildings in the old town and the nearby ultra-modern skyscrapers.
This week I've worked as a financial reporter. My first task was to interview the Prime Minister about Telia Sonera's offer for the Governments shares in Eesti Telekom. It was no problem getting a chat with the Prime Minister after a press conference. (See some pictures here!)
My mission is to identify new revenue opportunities, possible improvements and find more synergies between Äripäev and the other newspapers in BBP, with an emphasis on Dagens Industri and the online activities. It is exciting and quite similar to my job in Stockholm as New Media Business Area Manager at SF Bio.
I am also working on a profile story on one of Estonia's ten most famous people who actually lives in Sweden. Can you guess who this is?
