App Explosion

First came Islands Pictures App for the iPhone and iPad. Now, the June 2010 issue of Islands promotes the app on the cover and includes three scannable tags inside that unlock three more special apps.

"Developing our new Pictures iPhone app opened up fresh ways for our editorial team to inspire and inform our intrepid travelers," says Chris Tauber, brand manager of Islands. "As readers travel with smartphones and now iPads, we're offering them a way to jump seamlessly from the magazine to visual, touch-based content."

The three special apps are Islands Recipes, building off the magazine's food column and adding shareable recipe cards and audio; Islands Reader's Choice, in which readers can vote for a favorite photo from the magazine and win a camera; and Islands Travel Guide: Dominican Republic, with an interactive map, photo gallery and day-by-day itinerary to complement the feature article. All of these Web-based apps are designed to fit perfectly on the iPad and iPhone, but are viewable with other smartphones and browsers.
