Let Them Eat Cake

GROW's Nia Williams gives us office tip number two from Melbourne's Five Mile Press.

I've been here nearly five weeks now, and I can honestly say that Five Mile is extremely quiet, unlike Autumn! I've noticed that the phones don't ring at Five Mile, unlike every minute at Autumn, but that's probably due to a receptionist. Whatever call comes in gets directed to that person or department. On the other hand, they do have more than one number.

There is no music being played here, not even the radio; everyone is very quiet and studious. To me, Five Mile is enormous in comparison to Autumn, especially their warehouse, which is about three times as big as ours. Fortunately for Five Mile, the warehouse is right next to the office, and not half an hour drive away.

It has slightly more staff than us, about 40 in all. The offices are on two levels: design, production and editorial on the first floor, and accounts and sales on the ground. The sales guys work in-house and have their own offices too.  They even make their own mock-ups when busy, totally the reverse of Autumn. And I don't mean that in a negative way, girls. I'm just reporting back on the difference between two offices! It's a new modern building, on an industrial estate, and has been the home of Five Mile for a little over a year.

Nearly all the staff have their own office, this is new for me, as I've always worked in an open plan environment. But the design team are together in a little booth, or whatever you call it. It's probably the same size as my design office back home. So I'm glad that we're all together. I'd feel left out otherwise.

It's been a few weeks of birthdays since I got here, so there has been a lot of cake. The plan is, you never buy your own cake, whoever's birthday it is before yours, they buy or provide the cake. I like that idea, but it would take some organizing, as you'd always forget whose birthday it is, but nonetheless, great idea! So I'm going to make that my number two tip for the office. Here are some more piccies for you all.
