Design Around the World

GROW ambassador Malin Westman takes her design skills from Stockholm to Sydney.

A little bit more then a week has passed since I arrived at the Sydney airport (5 am) where Sue Burke, Creative Director at Weldon Owen Publishing, kindly picked me up. Then off to the apartment which has a great view of the city. I can even see the roof of the Opera House—not bad!

The colleagues are not only friendly but fun! The humor hits a good level in this office. Today my new co-workers imitated sounds and calls of Australian birds, very educational. You can tell this is a non-fiction publisher—they know their facts.

Usually I work with children's fiction books, designing covers and layouts at Bonnier Carlsen in Stockholm. And as of January, I have also been working as a designer at Bonnierforlagen's marketing department. Before working at Bonnier I worked in advertising. I earned my design degree in the U.S. (1998).

Last year, I had the opportunity to work at Weldon Owen in San Francisco for a short time, where I had a great time. That is one of the main reasons I applied to the GROW program for the designer position at Weldon Owen in Sydney.

Photo: In my hand a small skim latte. I pass about 20 coffee stops on my way to the office. The lattes in North Sydney have pretty consistent quality and are almost always really hot. But there is always a line and it doesn't go that fast. North Sydney is a business area, but still seems pretty laid back. The suits don't mind waiting for their coffee. Neither do I.
