Meet April Robertson-Ring

Taking in the history and learning new ways of communicating, April Robertson-Ring makes the most of three months in Stockholm.

April Robertson-Ring is not a city person. "I come from the panhandle of Florida, which is really the rural south and not the Florida that most people think of," says Robertson-Ring, who is living in Stockholm for three months under Bonnier's GROW program. Which was one of the reasons she decided to apply for GROW: She wanted to challenge herself, and she thought that Stockholm would be a good way to get a taste of city life very different from her life in Winter Park at Bonnier Corporation. "It's also a challenge living on my own," she says. "I've basically always had roommates, first in a dorm in college and then at graduate school, and then I got married."

So far, despite a few rocky subway experiences that Robertson-Ring handled with aplomb, Stockholm is providing plenty for her to take in. "I've decided that I really want to focus on getting to know Stockholm, I want to see as much as possible of the city and I hope that by the time I leave, I feel like I really know it," she says.

One of the biggest differences for her has been on the job. In Florida, she works as an audience development manager, helping all the websites at Bonnier Corporation to grow their audiences. In Stockholm she is working at Bonnier headquarters on a project for Corporate Development Mergers & Acquistions. "The Swedish communication style is really different," she says. "Meetings start and end more quickly, and I've learned to be more direct about asking questions. There's not a whole lot of recapping what's been decided. It's a great learning experience for me."

Though she's been in Stockholm less than two weeks, she's enjoying learning how to do even the smallest things, which sometimes end up not being so small. "It's the basic stuff that sometimes can be more complicated than you think and takes time, like finding food, navigating the subway or even just figuring out how to pay for things with your credit card," she says. "But I love being in a place that's so much older than Florida. It's such an opportunity to see history in a way I can't at home."

So far, she's managing not to miss too much from the U.S. "I hope my husband won't mind when he reads this, but the thing I really miss most is my dog and petting and holding her furry little self," she says. "I can Skype with my husband, but it doesn't really work with her."
