Tine Lund and the Locals

From Denmark to Australia: Our GROW participant mingles with the natives.

On Saturday I met up with one of my work colleagues, Gabby, at Rozelle Markets. It was another lovely day in Sydney and I looked forward to visiting a new part of the city. Rozelle is outside the city centre, about a 20-minute drive on a busy road with lots of cafes and restaurants. The area used to be working class, but now it is considered trendy. The markets were only small, held on school grounds. There was a woman singing, playing her guitar and creating a very relaxed atmosphere. Stalls varied from food to natural soaps, antique jewelry and average people selling their old junk! I tried a Japanese pancake and walked around sipping my coffee.  I even managed to bargain down an old teapot Gabby wanted!

I was also invited to a real Aussie BBQ on Sunday afternoon.  I arrived around 4pm and met the other guests. I was soon given a beer and started chatting about what sort of work that we all did and music we listened to. The people I enjoyed talking to most were some young guys in their 20s and early 30s who had '70s style hairdos and liked to say everything was "Sweet!"  It didn't matter if we were talking about bands from Iceland, the fact the food was ready or when they found out I was from Denmark. Everyone was welcoming and it was such a varied bunch of people. Not many people had met before, so I didn't feel like too much of an outsider. The BBQ was held in the backyard of a small block of apartments and it wasn't long before our BBQ meat was cooked, along with chargrilled chili eggplant, field mushrooms...not to mention fresh crusty bread and salads...a real feast! There was even dessert, courtesy of one of the young guy's experimenting with his mum's recipe for banana cake! Yum!
