With the release of the first iPads less than a week ago, the Popular Science+ application has been a hot item - both for those buying apps and in the news. "We're thrilled with the reception Popular Science+ has received across the board. Yesterday we were singled out by Apple's Steve Jobs for the work we've done so far with the app. We really think the future of digital publishing is bright for us," says Mark Jannot, editor in chief of Popular Science.
The app was launched officially by Popular Science on Tuesday with much fanfare at LaPomme in New York. Attending the event were key journalists and advertisers.
The app was first available for purchase on Saturday and since then has been one of the two top paid apps from media companies, along with the app from Time magazine. The two are the only two paid apps from media companies that continue to be among the top 50 apps at Apple's App Store.
Popular Science+ was one of the apps cited most often in the press and among bloggers as being the most creative and well-designed of all magazine apps. "Look at the fantabulous app from Popular Science where each story is a wonderland that you can scroll and push and pull, moving overlay and text and stories around like a jigsaw puzzle," wrote Howard Chua-Eoan at Time.com.
Stories mentioning the app also appeared online and/or in print in the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, Ad Week and Media Week, Ad Age, Fast Company, the Huffington Post, the Daily Beast, Media Bistro and Gizmodo, with TV mentions on Fox News and the Charlie Rose Show, just to name a few.
Bloggers also spread the news fast, including Brad Colbow's video review which quickly spread virally. As influential blogger Jason Kottke of Kottke.org put it: "What amazes me is that you don't feel like you're using a website, or even that you're using an e-reader on a new tablet device -- which, technically, is what it is. It feels like you're reading a magazine."
