Life At Bonnier - Februari 2012

Meet Gustav Thuman

I never rest on my laurels, says Gustav Thuman, Bonnier Sales Awards finalist who wants eventually to be the CEO of Dagens Nyheter.

On March 16, the Rookie of the Year in the Bonnier Sales Awards will be given out, and Gustav Thuman is one of the finalists.

"It feels really good right now, success breeds success, I feel a bit like I'm walking on a cloud!" says Thuman. "I'm incredibly proud to be a part of such a fantastically great organization. I've never had such expert guidance and feedback from managers and colleagues for the decisions and challenges I face.

Meet Jennifer Girhammar

Broadening her knowledge of the magazine business is Bonnier Sales Award finalist Jennifer Grihammar's next challenge.

To become a finalist as Rookie of the Year in the Bonnier Sales Awards wasn't the goal for Jennifer Girhammar, who has worked as a sales representative for Bonnier Tidskrifter for nearly a year.

"It's exciting of course," says Girhammar. "I haven't worked directly to be nominated but I know I did well for me. It's a great honor."

Girhammar has been a sales representative for all the Bonnier Tidskrifter titles since April 2011.

Meet Mark Poulalion

GROW participant from Florida finds a great team to work with in Sweden.

Mark Poulalion couldn't pass up the chance to trade Orlando, Florida for Stockholm, Sweden. "I have always loved to work with people from different cultures and different parts of the world," says Poulalion, who normally works as a publishing systems integrator at Bonnier Corporation, but is spending three months as a project manager at Bonnier Digital under Bonnier's GROW program.

While the cultures and countries are different - "it's much colder outside here," says Poulalion - the jobs are surprisingly similar.

Flying Flies On

With a long history behind it, Flying magazine looks to the future.

When Charles Lindbergh made his historic flight from New York to Paris in 1927, publishing entrepreneur William Ziff started up his first magazine, Popular Aviation, in honor of the flight. The magazine quickly became the most widely read aviation magazine in the world, changing its name to Flying in the 1930s.

Journalism Prize Opens Up

For the first time, using Facebook the public can vote for the audience favorite in the Finnish Grand Prize for Journalism.

Since its founding in 2001, the Finnish Grand Prize for Journalism has been one of the most prestigious media awards in Finland, recognizing the best in journalistic efforts for the year. And the awards for 2011 will be no different, except for one change: The public will be able to cast its vote for a special "Audience Favorite" prize.

DN+ Attracting Advertisers

Dagens Nyheter finds a novel way to entice advertisers to tablets, with help from Resumé.

When Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter launched its iPad app DN+ in late 2010, it was an immediate critical hit. But advertisers were few and far between. "We had a much-appreciated and beautiful product with DN+, but altogether too few advertisers," says Kristofer Dalin, project manager at the Bonnier-owned Dagens Nyheter.

It’s a Great Place to Work

Bonnier Publications Oy is among the top ten places to work in Finland according to recent ranking.

What makes a company a good place to work? "Workers need to find their work meaningful and be able to understand why they do what they do," says Marjaana Toiminen, CEO for Finnish magazine maker Bonnier Publications Oy. Toiminen should know, since the company was just named the 7th best medium-sized company to work for in Finland by the Great Place to Work Institute.
