A Language from Outer Space

Working with director James Cameron, linguist and professor Paul Frommer created a complete language for the Na’vi characters in the blockbuster film Avatar. He personally coached the actors on the exotic sounds and vocabulary to complete the effect of transporting filmgoers to another world. His language has developed a life of its own on fan websites and discussion boards – Frommer even receives fan letters written in Na’vi.

Marian Bantjes’ designs for major publications, including the New York Times, WIRED and Wallpaper magazine, have made her a cult name in the design world. Her success has come from daring to be intensely personal, using custom type and elaborate ornamentation. She works internationally from her home on Bowen Island in Canada, where she also writes and teaches.

Chocolate Stories

Katrina Markoff created Vosges Haut-Chocolat to “bring the world closer to peace through chocolate.” She personally chooses every exotic spice, root, nut and flower, allowing each bite of her chocolate to tell a story about a special place in the world. A graduate of Le Cordon Bleu, Markoff has apprenticed with chefs in Europe, Asia and Australia.

Tomas Saraceno

14 Billions

Argentine artist Tomas Saraceno created the most buzz of any artist at Bonniers Konsthall gallery this year with his architectural installation 14 Billions, a room-scale model of a Black Widow spider web. He has used lasers and MRI technology to research and create his art. He has even collaborated with NASA scientists. Saraceno’s pieces walk the line between art, architecture and science.

Around the Universe in 18 Minutes

Professor Anders Ynnerman collaborated on the world’s most complete four-dimensional map of the universe. A resulting film, made in cooperation with the American Museum of Natural History, takes viewers from the Himalayas through the Earth’s atmosphere into space and beyond our galaxy. It has received more than 5 million views on YouTube. Ynnerman has received awards for his contributions in the visualization of real-time data.

Robert Gupta

Healing with Passion and a Violin

A musical prodigy and a student of medicine, violinist Robert Gupta firmly believes in the superior healing power of music. He joined the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the age of 19, and made his solo debut at age 11, with the Israel Philharmonic under Zubin Mehta. Gupta teaches violin to Nathaniel Ayers, the gifted schizophrenic musician played by Oscar-award winner Jamie Foxx in the film The Soloist.

L.A.-based singer-songwriter Jill Sobule writes songs that combine social and political themes with catchy lyrics and upbeat melodies. She was one of the first artists to raise funds by appealing to her fans, rewarding their investments with personal thanks and gifts, from T-shirts to private concerts in their living rooms. She released her seventh studio album California Years on her own record label in 2009.

Am I Done Writing?

It was her own divorce that led Elizabeth Gilbert, the versatile magazine writer, novelist, and short-story author, to write about a woman's search for everything that can bring happiness. Her 2006 memoir Eat Pray Love became a smash hit, selling 7 million copies worldwide. She’s been listed by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world, and is now portrayed by Julia Roberts in the film adaptation of her story.
